Поздоровайся с присутствующими: «Good morning!» Никаких «Hello!» и «Hi!». И не забудь назвать номер своего билета: «My examination card is number five» or «The number of my examination card is number five».

Воспользуйся следующими выражениями: «Could you repeat the question / that, please?», «Could you say it once again, please?», «I didn’t understand / get it». Фразы «May I have a minute», «Let me think» помогут учителям понять, что ты собираешься с мыслями.

В конце экзамена поблагодари комиссию за внимание и попрощайся: «Thank you for your attention», «Thank you for taken time», «See you!», «Bye!», «Have a nice day!». Тренируйся на уроках английского языка, чтобы на экзамене чувствовать себя like a fish in water.

At the age of sixty-five, Laura Ingalls Wilder began writing a series of novels for young people based on her early experiences on the American frontier. Born in the state of Wisconsin in 1867, she and her family were rugged pioneers. Seeking better farm land, they went by covered wagon to Missouri in 1869, then on to Kansas the next year, returning to Wisconsin in 1871, and traveling on to Minnesota and Iowa before settling permanently in South Dakota in 1879. Because of this constant moving, Wilder’s early education took place sporadically in a succession of one-room schools. From age thirteen to sixteen, she attended school more regularly, although she never graduated.
At the age of eighteen, she married Almanzo James Wilder. They bought a small farm in the Ozarks, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Their only daughter, Rose, who had become a nationally-known journalist, encouraged her mother to write. Serving as agent and editor, Rose negotiated with Harper’s to publish her mother’s first book, Little House in the Big Woods. Seven more books followed, each chronicling her early life on the plains. Written from the perspective of a child, they have remained popular with young readers from many nations. Twenty years after her death in 1957, more than 20 million copies had been sold, and they had been translated into fourteen languages. In the spring of 1934, storms swept across the Great Plains, but they were not rainstorms. They were the result of sun and drought and a terrible wind that blew millions of tons of topsoil from 300,000 square miles in Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico. This was the Dust Bowl. It buried fences, fields, and homes. It choked cattle and sickened the people who stayed. Three hundred and fifty thousand settlers fled, many becoming part of a slow, sad caravan along Route 66 to California.
But wind and drought were not the only factors that combined to create the Dust Bowl. Only fifty years earlier, a carpet of buffalo grass had covered the Great Plains, protecting the soil and retaining the moisture in the ground. By the turn of the century, farmers had settled, homesteading in regions that had been used as range land. The increased demand for wheat during World War I encouraged farmers to plow and plant even wider areas. Forty percent of the land that they plowed up had never been exposed to rain, wind, or sun before. When the drought and wind came, the land had been prepared for disaster.

Native Americans

Native Americans came to the American Continent from Asia. They lived in tribes. The tribes were very different: some grew their food, some were fishermen and hunters. They lived in wooden houses or wigwams and thought that there were spirits around them – in trees, fire or water. To make their spirit kind, Indians had ceremonies with dancing and music. Indian songs and poems helped them to remember their traditions and history. Many Indians still live in reservations, they try to keep their traditions and language. There are regular festivals where Indians perform their dances and play their music.

Clothes.

Our clothes help us to stay warm and dry in any weather. They help us to look good too. Clothes are very important for us. Some people often change their clothes, some people don’t. We buy different clothes for different seasons. In winter we wear coats, fur coats, thick jackets, hats, scarves, boots, gloves and mittens. In spring we change into raincoats and thin jackets. In summer we like wearing light skirts and dresses, shorts and T-shirts of bright colours, trainers and sandals. English people say, “There is no bad weather, there are bad clothes”.

London Bridge.

London Bridge is two thousand years old. The first bridge was of wood. Then people built the bridge of stone and called it London Bridge. There were houses and shops on it and people paid money when they crossed the bridge. In 1831 a new bridge rose in the place of the first bridge. But the city grew very quickly and in 1960 the people of London wanted to build a large new bridge at that place. A very rich American bought the old London Bridge as people buy old things. He wanted to show the old bridge in America to people for money. The people of London liked their old London Bridge. But the city needed money for the new bridge. The American brought the parts of the bridge on a ship to Arizona in the USA. Workers built the old bridge but there was no river under it now, only a street. No ships pass under it now, only people walk along the street and look at the old bridge. In 1973 the New London Bridge was opened in the place of the old bridge over the Thames.

About Badgers.

A badger is a very interesting animal, but you can see him only in the evening, when it is dark. Then the badger comes out of the underground home to eat. The father badger is a big animal, as big as a cat. He is covered with grey fur, his legs are short and very strong, he can dig very well. His head is white with a little black fur on the top. Badgers sleep during the day, and all winter too. In summer they come out in the dark when they want to eat. They eat berries, apples, and sometimes little birds or mice. Badgers are very cleanly animals. When they come out from their underground homes, they begin to wash their faces with their front paws, then they comb their long fur with their paws. When they have done all that, the old badgers begin to play and to show their young how to catch mice or little birds.

They were ready to watch the races. There were forty skaters, twenty boys and twenty girls. The boys and the girls had to skate in turn until one girl and one boy won two races. They stood in a long line at the start. When the signal was given, the girls began the race. Hilda and Gretel with three other girls were soon in front.

Edinburgh.

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It lies on seven hills and goes down those hills to the sea. The highest hill is three hundred meters above the sea. From the street in the centre of the city you can see ships coming to Edinburgh from different countries of the world. In the "old town” the streets are narrow. The houses with narrow windows go up the hills to Edinburgh castle which is one thousand years old. The modern town lies at the foot of the hills. The streets here are straight and well planned, so it is easy to walk in the city when you go sightseeing in Edinburgh. The people say that only two cities in the world are so well planned-Edinburgh and St. Petersburg. Many great men lived and worked in Edinburgh. Robert Burns, a great Scottish poet, published his first book of poems in Edinburgh. There is a monument to him in the city.

When they came, he didn’t thank them. He said, "There is no wolf. It was a joke. You can all go back home.” The boy did this three times. Билет № __ Daddy-Long-Legs.

Dear Daddy-Long-Legs, I like the college very much. I am happy that I can study. I like the girls and the teachers and the classes. The teacher of English literature liked my compositions. But I know very little of English literature. We had very few books in the library at the Children’s Home. I never read "David Copperfield” by Dickens, or "Robinson Crusoe” by Defoe. Now I am reading "Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll and stories by Rudyard Kipling. The girls in the college know very much. I didn’t know that people were monkeys many millions of years ago. I never heard of Sherlock Holmes. I didn’t know anything about Michelangelo. And one day when I heard the name, I asked the girls if he was a student at our college. The girls laughed at me and told the story to other girls. Now I know these things and a lot of others. But I have to read many books.

ARE YOU PROUD OF BEING BELARUSIAN?
I am Belarusian because my parents who gave me life and brought me up are Belarusians. And what if I were born in a different country on a different continent? In my opinion, a sense of pride in your country, a sense of belonging to a particular nation develops in a person with time. Therefore at my age, by the way I am 18,1 can say quite positively, that I am proud to live in Belarus.

The real treasure of Belarus is its wonderful nature. The country has hundreds of wild forests, rolling hills, green valleys, sweet-scented meadows and golden fields. Belo^ezhskaya Pushcha is the only place where you can meet mighty European bison in the wild. Belarus is also famous for its clear lakes and ribbonlike rivers, that’s why it’s called a blue-eyed one. The resorts of lakes Naroch and Braslav are open all year round and let tourists experience the unforgettable peaceful atmosphere.

I am proud of the rich heroic history of my country. Although for many centuries we were part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania*, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth* and then the Russian Empire*, we have managed to stay united and haven’t lost our uniqueness. Many foreigners admit that our people are extremely sociable, hospitable, generous and, welcoming. We are also described as resourceful and peaceful. When socialising, Belarusians are open, warmhearted, fun-loving, humorous and outgoing in spite of all the difficulties they face in their life.
